Students and teachers enjoyed a potpourri of chemistry, physics and biology as they watched and participated in demonstrations about sound, chemical reactions, and extreme temperature changes. Maryland Science Center's Traveling Science Program brings hands-on, interactive science programs to schools, libraries and other educational venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Class of 1948 Tours School 60 Years Later BALTIMORE, MD, March 12, 2008 - Members of Mount Carmel Elementary Alumni, including members from the class of 1948, visited the school on March 11, 2008. The alumni group was organized by Mr. Bob Gomeringer who currently lives in Oklahoma. The group attended 8 a.m. Mass in Mount Carmel's Chapel. The Chapel was something new for the alumni since it existed only as the convent during their days at Mount Carmel. After Mass, the group walked across campus to the elementary school discussing how the buildings still very much looked the same. Some alumni commented that they remember the campus having pink buildings and surrounded by lots of wooded area, including the area that exists as our parking lot and soccer field today. Inside the elementary school, alumni were greeted by Mrs. Lisa Shipley, principal, in the cafeteria with some light refreshments and memorabilia on display. After chatting a bit, the group was led through the building by Mrs. Shipley. They visited classrooms and walked through the hallways. The group seemed impressed at the care that was given to the building that was originally built in the 1920's. They saw some familiar items such as the remnants of the old tin ceilings, coat closets, and the stairs that lead to the kindergarten and first grade, which were stairs leading to the auditorium in the late 40's. Some things had clearly changed. A computer lab for students and a cafeteria that served hot lunches were not part of Mount Carmel in the late 1940's. What a treat it was for Mount Carmel and its students to have these visitors. Alumni are welcomed to return to Mt. Carmel any time to witness the wonderful changes and familiar pieces that are Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School.
