12th Grade Curriculum

English

British Literature

This course is a requirement of all twelfth grade students.  The program focuses on English Literature and also delves into selective world masterpieces.  The course material may be presented chronologically, thematically, or according to genres and highlights works from Beowulf through contemporary literature.  While studying the works of some of England’s most prominent and influential authors, students also explore noteworthy world masterpieces that have influenced present day literature.  In addition, students develop their abilities as writers as they analyze and demonstrate literary concepts.  Vocabulary and grammar lessons supplement the English literature curriculum.  Senior students are required to complete a research paper in order to graduate.  (Both honors and regular sections are offered for this course.)

Theology

Christian Lifestyles

0.5 credit

This course is designed to assist seniors in the preparation for marriage, family life, and Christian vocation decisions. Topics include: discerning vocations, understanding interpersonal relationships, communication skills, and mature love. All topics are presented in light of the teachings of the Catholic Church. This course is taken by all Seniors.

World Religions

0.5 credit

This course surveys the world's major religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, Judaism, and Islam. Attention is given to Christianity at the end of the course, and the students gain a deeper appreciation of their own faith in light of the world's great religions. This is a semester elective for Seniors.

Science

Seniors who have completed the 3 required science credits may opt to take one of the science electives.

Social Studies

American Government/Honors American Government

1 credit

A full year course in American Government is a requirement for graduation and is to be taken in the senior year.  Emphasis is placed on the development of the student's understanding of the American democratic process and his or her responsibility as a citizen of the United States.  The ability to compare and contrast the American political and economic systems to that of other countries is expected.  Global issues and current events are studied and analyzed, with special emphasis on the use of technology.  Vocabulary necessary to the understanding of governmental and economic processes is to be mastered.

This course offers students the opportunity to reinforce skills and concepts achieved in Advanced Algebra while applying these principles to rational and irrational number systems. Emphasis is placed on solving verbal problems, solving and graphing Inequalities and Absolute Value problems, working with relations, linear and quadratic functions. A graphing calculator is required.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry & Advanced Algebra and permission of Instructor.

College Classes will be offered for those students who test into the programs. All course description, rules and grading will be per College Standards.
