Incoming Freshmen-Summer Reading
Honors class: Gifted Hands by Dr. Ben Carson AND The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Assignment: Gifted Hands: Same as for the standard class (see below) and be prepared for an in-class discussion on the book.
Assignment:The Hobbit: Create a five page newspaper (8 ½ x 11 inch paper)---become “one” with the “hobbit” world and write creative news stories, traffic and weather reports, advertisements, etc. When I read your paper, I want to feel like a hobbit!!! You may create it online and email it to me( Ms. Petr) ---or you may draw it by hand---or use both medias! If you use pictures from the internet, please give credit to the website. Please email me if you have any questions---bpetr@ olmcmd.org and be prepared for an in-class discussion on the book.
Standard class: Gifted Hands by Dr. Ben Carson
Assignment: Using all of the good advice that Dr. Carson gives us in his book, create a 5 page (8 ½ by 11 inch loose leaf) booklet for students to use. Be creative! There must be a cover that connects to the book in addition to the 5 pages. The pages inside the booklet should be typed (or printed very neatly—no handwriting) and include quotes and stories from the book. Your booklet MUST include Dr. Carson’s acronym, THINK BIG, along with the meanings for each letter from Chapter 22. Please know that 5 pages is the minimum requirement—you are free to make the booklet longer! Please email me (Ms. Petr) if you have any questions---bpetr@ olmcmd.org. I do not want pictures in the booklet, although you may use one for the cover. Also, be prepared for an in-class discussion on the book.
Rising Sophomores-Summer Reading
Honors class-Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Assignment: Using journalistic style (answering who, what, were, when, how, why, to what extent) create illustrated newspaper articles highlighting 2 significant events. Be creative! Make your articles appear as they would in a newspaper. Download appropriate illustrations or create your own. Due one week after the first day of classes. Be prepared for an in-class discussion on the book.

Rising Seniors-Summer Reading
College and Honors classes: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
College and Honors Assignment: Find five quotes from the novel and write a paragraph for each discussing its importance to the meaning of the work and its themes. Type the quote first, along with its page number-skip a line and begin your paragraph. You may submit your assignment by email to Ms. Petr at bpetr @ olmcmd .org for the Honors class or to Ms. Beatty at jbeatty @ olmcmd.org for the College class. Please put your name in the subject line when you send it. You may also printout a copy of your assignment and turn it in on the first day of class. Standard class: PICK ONE: The Blind Side by Michael Lewis OR Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs, and the Chesapeake Bay by William Warner
