Our Lady of Mount Carmel Students Earn National MATHCOUNTS Recognition for Student-Led Math Outreach
Students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School have earned national recognition for their leadership and innovation in mathematics. The school’s Math Club project, “Student-Led DaMath Outreach and Competition Initiative,” has been selected for the Gold Level Honor Roll by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation through its National Math Club program.
As part of this recognition, the project will be featured among the National Math Club Gold Honor Roll Projects, a distinction awarded to only nine schools across the United States. Our Lady of Mount Carmel was also selected as one of only three schools nationwide recognized for Community Service, highlighting the impact of the Math Club’s student-led DaMath initiative.
DaMath, a strategy-based board game that blends mathematical problem-solving with gameplay, served as the foundation for the project. Students organized outreach efforts and competitions that introduced peers to the game, helping expand interest in mathematics through collaboration, mentorship, and friendly competition.
Through this initiative, Mount Carmel students traveled throughout the Baltimore region to teach and host DaMath events at several Archdiocesan schools, including:
- Archbishop Borders School
- Immaculate Conception School
- St. Casimir School
- St. John the Evangelist School
- St. Joseph Cockeysville
These outreach events allowed Mount Carmel students to mentor younger peers while promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and enthusiasm for mathematics.
The initiative has been led by middle school math teacher Jerome Regalado, whose dedication helped guide students in developing and implementing the program.
“This recognition reflects the dedication, leadership, and creativity of our students,” Regalado said. “They took ownership of this initiative and demonstrated how math can bring people together while inspiring learning beyond the classroom.”
In addition to national visibility through the MATHCOUNTS program, participating students will receive personalized certificates, and the school will receive a $250 award to support continued math enrichment opportunities.
This achievement highlights not only the initiative of the Math Club students but also the strong culture of collaboration and support within the Mount Carmel school community.
